Hot Tub
Opening & Closing

Spa Opening

Opening a hot tub properly is more than just filling it with water and turning it on. A correct startup protects your equipment, prevents water issues, and ensures your spa is safe and ready for use.

When we open your spa after winter, we begin by flushing out any remaining antifreeze from the plumbing. If this step is skipped, residue can cause white foam and affect water quality once the pumps start running.

We reinstall all drain plugs and fittings, then fill the spa through the filter housing to reduce air pockets in the system. Once the water level is above the highest jets, we replace the filter cartridges and restore power at the electrical panel. The system will initialize, activate the pumps, and begin heating.

After startup, we balance the water to protect your equipment and ensure sanitizers work effectively. Proper water chemistry prevents scale, staining, and cloudy water. If needed, we can provide a full water analysis and recommend the right products to keep your spa clean and comfortable.

We also confirm that your filtration cycle is set correctly. Most spas require 10–14 hours of filtration per day to maintain clear, healthy water and ensure sanitizers circulate properly.

Once everything is running smoothly, your spa will begin heating to your preferred temperature — ready for relaxation, recovery, and stress‑free enjoyment.

Spa Closing

Winterizing a hot tub requires more than simply draining the water. A proper shutdown protects your spa from freezing temperatures, prevents costly damage, and ensures a smooth, trouble‑free reopening in the spring.

At Tactical Aquatics, we follow a thorough, industry‑standard winterizing process to ensure every component of your spa is protected. Because freezing can cause severe damage to pumps, heaters, plumbing lines, and fittings, we strongly recommend winterizing before temperatures drop below 0°C.

Our Spa Winterizing Process

  • Pre‑Winter Cleaning

    • We begin by cleaning and rinsing the spa interior and plumbing lines. This helps prevent scale, debris, and contaminants from sitting in the system all winter, which can damage equipment or create water quality issues in the spring.

  • Full System Drain

    • We cool the water, shut down power, and drain the spa safely using gravity or a submersible pump. During draining, we move water from seats and footwells to ensure the tub empties completely.

  • Removing Remaining Water

    • Once drained, we remove all remaining water using a shop vac, including from:

      • Jets

      • Suction fittings

      • Filter housing

      • Plumbing lines

      • Seats and footwells

This step is critical, even a small amount of trapped water can freeze and crack plumbing.

  • Filter Removal & Cleaning

    • We remove the filter cartridges, clean them thoroughly, and store them for spring. This prevents Mold, odours, and premature filter wear.

  • Protecting the Plumbing

    • We add spa‑safe antifreeze to the plumbing lines to protect against freezing and expansion during extreme cold.

  • Securing the Spa for Winter

    • We reinstall the drain valve, secure the hard cover, and add a protective tarp or winter cover. We also support the centre of the cover to prevent sagging or collapse under snow load.

Once complete, your spa is fully protected and ready to withstand the winter season.
